The MPWD supplies water to over 26,000 residents and over 600 businesses in the City of Belmont and portions of the cities of San Carlos, and Redwood City as well as unincorporated areas of San Mateo County.
Mr. Vella was first elected to the board of the Mid-Peninsula Water District (MPWD) formerly the Belmont County Water District in November 1999. He has since served in the capacity of Vice President and President of the District’s Board of Directors in 2001-02, 2005-06, 2009-10 and 20013-14.
Mr. Vella has over 40 years of professional work experience both in the private and the public sector. A few years ago he retired after 28years of municipal public service. He worked for over 4 years with the Public Works Department of the City of Redwood City, where he attained the position of Assistant Civil Engineer. He later served for over 24 years with the Redwood City Fire Department (RCFD) in various positions including interim Fire Chief. Vella completed his career with RCFD as the Administrative Chief-Fire Marshal.
During his working career, Mr. Vella’s community service included a very active involvement with the San Mateo County Fire Prevention Officers Association, where he served as President, and with the National Society of Executive Fire Officers, where he was a long time member.
Mr. Vella served on the board of his neighborhood association for over twenty years and was President for seven terms. Vella is a founding member of several philanthropic and charitable organizations that raise funds for various missions, including scholarships for college education, disabled children’s organizations and other worthy causes.
Mr. Vella is a Chancellor at the United States Consular Corps College. He holds a B.A. degree in Management and an Engineer-In-Training certificate from the California State Board of Professional Engineers.
Mr. Vella is married and has two adult children. He has lived in Belmont for over 33 years.
